This month’s board meeting had several notable items:

  • 2012 marks Seipelt Elementary’s 50th birthday!  An ice cream social celebration will be held Sunday, May 20, 2-4 pm at Seipelt.  All are welcome to join the staff (and Charlie Seipelt!) on this fun afternoon.
  • Five boys were recognized for their achievements at the State Swim Meet:  Alex Frank, David Matulis, Beau Robinson, Cade Williams and Thomas Prus
  • The Youth Task Force from Partners for a Drug-Free Milford-Miami Township presented the infomercial they made.  They also talked about the inspirational talk presented to Milford freshmen (see article here).
  • Each Milford school has raised money from students and staff to put benches in the Veteran’s Memorial at Miami Meadows Park.  Each bench was $2100.  The benches will be dedicated at a ceremony on Saturday, May 19.
  • Students can receive post-secondary (college) credit through Great Oaks courses.  A variety of options are available.  If your child is interested in taking advantage of this option, talk to your counselor for information.
  • Our financials continue to track at a 2% savings over budget.  This is in line with the official Five-Year Forecast that is filed with the state.
  • Seipelt Elementary officially accepted donations of $33,355 from the PTA ($28,680) and Starbucks Corporation ($4,675).  In addition, the district accepted two donations from Joe & Lisa Kuethe:  $565 for an iPad, case and gift card for the classroom of Jennifer Sauer; and $1,200 on behalf of MHS Athletics for an Advanced Cybex Incline Press.  Thanks to all for their generosity to the district & our schools!
  • The Milford Athletic Boosters’ Flight Night fundraiser was a great success.  Attendance was up 20%, and profit was double.  A great time was had by all and plans are already in the works for next year.
  • The 2012-13 calendar was changed slightly.  The 2013-14 calendar was approved.  Both will be available soon on the district website.
  • Summer reading books were approved.  Now all incoming Freshmen will have a summer reading assignment, versus just Freshman honors Language Arts students.  Required books are:  The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak for ninth grade; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon for tenth grade; Anthem by Ayn Rand for eleventh grade; and The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore for seniors.  All are wonderful books and worth reading.  If a parent has a problem with any book, options are available – contact your counselor.
